The original Hummer, an

great introduction to
boating

dinghy I built between 2005-07: a great introduction to sailing
"Hummer" the German and Norwegian word for "lobster"

Bar Harbor is on the eastern side
of M.D.I.

Spencer (in a kayak) and I (in the original Hummer) circled Bar Island back
in 2005.
We explored the rock outcropping between Bar Island and Sheep Porcupine.

A working harbor, Bass Harbor has a nice blue-collar feel. It's on M.D.I.'s quieter southwestern side.
Somes Sound is the fjord-like inlet in the middle of M.D.I.
Southwest Harbor area, where the lion's share of Hummer's voyages took placeHere's my take on the pecking order of M.D.I.'s main harbors (in terms of exclusivity and ethos:
Seal Harbor: exclusive oriented towards the upper crust, attracts a celebrity-wealth clientele
Northeast Harbor: points toward a high-end exclusivity w/ upper middle & upper crust clientele
Bar Harbor: popular tourist attraction, very crowded, especially w/ cruise ships & the CAT Ferry
Southwest Harbor: mix of pleasure boats & work boats, tourists; mediated amount of exclusivity
Bass Harbor: gritty, blue-collar, true Downeast working harbor, w/ ferry service to Swans IslandIt makes me wonder which one Jesus would likely hang around to locate potential disciples....

Put the original Hummer in
the northern waters of Long Pond and later explored the upper portion of it.
Hummer took her maiden sailing voyage in Echo Lake in
2007.

Took Hummer out into
Penobscot Bay in 2006, 2007
and

with an outboard motor.

Dad and I launched from Betsy's Cove in
Brookville and circled around Pumpkin Island in 2006.
In 2007 my sister Deb and I explored the southern side of Little Deer Isle,
circling Scott Island.

Our family's 1st experience with the Maine
coast was at a friend's cabin on
Northwest Harbor, Deer Isle.
About a mile NNW across Penobscot Bay is Scott Island
summer home of the late
Robert McCloskey.
Many years later, my brother Ed and I were treated to a stay at the Pilgrim Inn
in the town of Deer Isle.

McCloskey was a renowned
children's
book author and illustrator of
Morning
in Maine, Make Way for Ducklings, etc.

In 2009 I went out from
Stonington Harbor to a bit above Stinson Point on the western shore of Deer Isle
![]()

This is the area I
explored in Hummer in 2009. Dad and I drove down Goose Cove Road in 2006.
A home designed and built by the prolific American landscape architect Frederick
Law Olmsted
featured in the films, The Man Without a Face & Finding Home
is located N of Stinson Point.
2009 photos here.

In returning from Stinson Point I
tracked a lobsterboat for a while then circumnavigated Marks Island

Stonington's Harbor is utterly
fascinating a veritable Maine coast archipelago

This is a shore area I've
explored quite thoroughly (on land).

Lobster boat trip originated from
this cove. Did some fishing here in the late 1990s (caught 2 whitefish).
If I were to bring Hummer into the cove with the mast up (17 ft), they'd have to
raise the bascule bridge!

K'port's inner harbor is
picturesque. George H.W. Bush's house is on the peninsula E. of Cape
Arundel.

There's a harbor webcam located
here that I reference a lot for southern Maine weather conditions.

In September
2006, Grant H. and I
took Hummer out onto the Delaware River in Philadelphia, PA,
motoring from a ramp north of the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge down to Pennsauken Creek
and back.
Almost made it to the Betsy Ross Bridge, but there was a lot of storm debris
floating in the water.
Gotta admit it: the Delaware River's a bit of a letdown after boating blue water
off Maine's coast.

Grant H. takes Hummer down
the Delaware River (Tacony-Palmyra Bridge in the background)
Found out that it too is a bascule bridge (similar in operation to the one in
Perkins Cove, ME).

Pied Beauty
1877
Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889)
Glory be to God for dappled things —
For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches' wings;
Landscape plotted & pieced — fold, fallow, & plough;
And all trades, their gear & tackle & trim.
All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled, (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
Praise him.
