One Cool Cat

After a year of gettin' by without a cat since the passing of a beautiful Bengal named Melanie, I began looking for a Maine Coon.  Visited the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society's North Philly location on Hunting Park Ave. and learned they had recently rescued a scared, straggly, lanky, stray Maine Coon off the 2000 block of Mifflin St. in South Philadelphia.  After a tentative playful "bite" (lettin' the room know who's in charge), JaMaine, who looks about 1½ to 2 years old, slowly melted to the floor of the cage with contentment as I gave his left ear a good rub.  "Ah-right.  Won him over," thought he to himself (the notion shared by man 'n 'Maine alike).  "Deal."  Said to have dog-like dispositions and originally considered "working" cats (got...mice?), Maine Coons often have a distinctive "M" on the forehead, square muzzles, lion-like manes ("ruffs") around the head and upper chest, tufted paws and ears and bushy tails (JaMaine's looks a lot like a raccoon's).  "Whaddup, 'Maine?"  "Don'tcha worry.  I got you."

Even though he's adjusted well to life off the street, JaMaine retains his street boldness, still steppin' to challenges

A fairly sedate Bug Chaser session.  There've been wilder ones.

14 Ways JaMaine Acts More Like a Dog Instead of a Cat

1.  A 'people' cat: very sociable and loyal

He's almost always nearby — almost always within view — and whenever you move, he'll relocate with you.  When a door is closed, he'll wait on the other side — if you're in the back yard, he'll watch you from the back porch door or kitchen window.  He likes to jump up on the office chair and sit for a bit next to you as you work on the computer.  On occasion, when he senses you're about to leave, he'll run and grab his favorite stick, bring it to the door and drop it there.  Sometimes he'll bat the mini-blinds while the door's being locked.

2.  Fetches balls, sticks, pens, pencils, etc.

See videos below.

3.  Throws sticks into the air

See video below.

4.  Lots of things become chew toys

Mini-blind slats and cord ornaments, backs of sneakers, pencils, boat oars (!), cardboard, packing tape still stuck on boxes, his hind foot (when feeling frisky) . . .

5.  Somewhat fearless

Rarely fazed by loud noises — steps to things bigger than he is, like humans who try to scare him while playing hide and seek.  And yes, he's scared his owner once or twice.

6.  Wags tail

Not the normal cat tail "twitch," JaMaine sometimes waves his large fluffy tail back and forth while playing with you.  See video below where he does it on demand.

7.  Talkative

Occasionally an interactive talker, you can actually go back and forth with him.  Sometimes his 'meows' have that characteristic Maine Coon 'ratchet' quality.

8.  Well-acclimated to water

Actually quite fascinated with it -- see video below

9.  Comes when called

Really.  Not always right away, but he does come.

10.  Acts like a watch dog

Instantaneously alert and vigilantly focused when people come to the front door.

11.  Occasionally given to doing a full gallop around the house

Just for the sake of rippin' and runnin' it seems.

12.  Occasionally "gnaws" on a hind leg

Lying on his side, he'll sometimes grab it with his font paws and "chomp" it then get up and run.

13.  Occasionally chases, grabs and nips at your feet

Much like a dog at play.

14.  Lays down / sits like a Labrador retriever

Front legs out front, paws together and perfectly aligned — with hind legs out to one side.

JaMaine is one very intelligent cat: he sometimes follows the hand moving the object instead of just the object itself, picks up pencils with a cupped paw (in conjunction with his shoulder), bats the ball between both front paws inside of a plastic round-about-runner type toy (the "Bug Chaser") and can throw things into the air.  Very athletic (he's taken up parkouring all around the house), very sociable (almost always in one's immediate vicinity), very affectionate and an interactive talker.

He's OK with being picked up and (when invited) will occasionally come sit on the lap for a short spell.  Extremely playful.  Bats at your toes to get you out of bed and sometimes plays "ankle tag" when he either wants to play or wants you to know his food bowl is empty.  Every once in a while he'll launch into "antic" mode and act like a goofy nut, rippin' 'n runnin' through the house.  When pouncing on something he occasionally jump straight up into the air and his huge tail will twitch like a squirrel's.  It's not uncommon to see him put a cupped paw in the water bowl and lick the water from his paw (!).  Here he is, fetching a tinfoil ball, followed by some loud purring and, in the second take, surprisingly does some precise ball placement!

. . . he's got it.  Watch the video below:

Like many Maine Coons, JaMaine is fascinated by water.

. . . and from atop an office divider in the back bedroom.

Parkouring we shall go!
Hark! What's that noise?  Sounds like cat claws
tearing their way up some kind of tautly-stretched fabric.
Whoa!  Look ... up there ... atop the divider wall!
The mighty hunter grabs his prey:
a metal-belled, multi-feathered cat teaser.
Cautiously, he turns and drags it across the divide,
bringing it down with ... um ... great aplomb ... and a plop.
There.  Done.  Now ... move away from the area ...
