Placid, peaceful Perkins Cove.  Took the Finestkind Lobstering trip in 1997 out of this harbor
to see how lobstering is done.  Took a pile of 35mm pictures that I hope to scan and post.

A boat, a rusty anchor and an old wooden lobster trap near the dock in Bass Harbor

Classic 37" Maine wooden lobster trap ( according to the tags, it was used 1996-2001 ) topped with
an equally classic wooden lobster buoy.  The thing is ingenious: efficient in design & well-crafted.
The half-barrel wood construct is fitted with knotted cord netting, 5 flat rock slabs ( which weigh it
down to the ocean floor ), a three-hole black plastic escape vent ( for undersize lobsters and other
creatures ) and rope. Everything's held together with nails, knots and 3 rubber hinges on the door.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

1. Lobster attracted by bait in "pocket" (A),
finds opening in "head" (B) leading into
 "kitchen" compartment (C).

2. Lobster wanders around kitchen to
find way out. Easiest to climb inner
head (D) leading into "parlor" (E).

3. Lobster can get out of parlor
once in a while but even then
usually returns.

Lobsterman John Stanley takes the "Linda Sea" out into Somes Sound of Mt. Desert Island

John hauls the lobster trap onto the gunwale

Trap waits to be emptied & set.  Been a tough season for lobstering.

Dockside, John separates soft-shelled lobsters from the hard-shelled, readying them for weighing
